Venezia FC is pleased to announce the signing of United States international midfielder Tanner Tessmann, 19, from FC Dallas of Major League Soccer.
Over the last year-and-a-half, Tessmann has seen a meteoric rise on the American soccer scene.
After graduating high school, Tessmann was set to attend Clemson University on an athletic scholarship — not only to play for the soccer team, but to kick for the football team as well — until he burst into the first team at FC Dallas last year. Tessmann had joined FC Dallas’ residency program in 2016, and after starring in the club’s academy — scoring 25 goals in 67 appearances in U.S. Soccer Development Academy play — FC Dallas manager Luchi Gonzalez called Tessmann into preseason with the first team in February 2020. Though still 18 years old at the time, the physically-gifted midfielder quickly demonstrated he was ready for the MLS level, and FC Dallas signed Tessmann to an MLS Homegrown contract on February 27, 2020. Just two days later, Tessmann made his professional debut in the 2020 MLS season opener, playing all 90 minutes in a 2-0 win over Philadelphia. Tessmann would go on to make 21 appearances in a stellar rookie season, including two appearances in the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs.
In January 2021, Tessmann’s impressive play and potential was rewarded with his first cap for the senior national team, coming on as a substitute in a 7-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago. Tessmann also made three appearances for the U.S. Under-23 national team in the 2020 Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship last March.
Tessmann made 7 appearances in the ongoing 2021 MLS season before completing his move to Venice.
He joins Weston McKennie (Juventus) and Bryan Reynolds (AS Roma) as FC Dallas academy products in Serie A.
Benvenuto, Tanner.
