Serie A 21/22: Venezia - Bologna postmatch

May 8, 2022

After taking an early 2-0 lead, then conceding three unanswered goals to visitors Bologna, Venezia were facing the prospect of relegation to Serie B at the final whistle — but they would not say die, responding with Mattia Aramu’s equalizer from the penalty spot in the 78th minute and Dennis Johnsen’s spectacular winner in the 93rd minute to capture a thrilling 4-3 victory at Stadio Penzo on Sunday afternoon in Giornata 36 of the 2021/22 Serie A season, keeping alive the team’s hopes of top flight survival.

After the match, Venezia caretaker manager Andrea Soncin and Venezia attackers Thomas Henry and Dennis Johnsen spoke to the press.

Andrea Soncin:

“Today we achieved what I had asked of the team before the game: a show of pride, worthy of winning over our fans. We had to demonstrate courage today, and that's what we did in a thrilling game. We'll see what happens in the other matches, but this must be the spirit of our team regardless of the results of our opponents.

The first phase of our match was very good: we played vertically, as we wanted to do from the beginning. Bologna's quality is undeniable, especially in midfield and in attack — we knew we would suffer, but the lads continued to play with courage even after going down 2-3, ultimately turning the result around. As we have often said, individual episodes decide the games: today's episodes did nothing but reward the boys' determination.

When I arrived in the first team, I found a group that was accountable in a difficult moment. I asked them for more courage in attack.”

Thomas Henry:

“It was difficult for us to endure so many consecutive defeats; today was a real relief. The key words are dignity and pride: we have to give everything, for the club and for ourselves. The fans were very encouraging today and we are counting on their support over the next few crucial days.”

Dennis Johnsen:

“We will fight for salvation as long as there is even a shred of hope. The fans have been exceptional, fundamental for today's victory. They have supported us from the first day until now, we owe this important result to them.”
