In their first match under caretaker manager Andrea Soncin, Venezia put in one of their best performances of the second half of the season in their visit to Juventus, and deservedly went level late in the match on Mattia Aramu's beautiful 71st minute volley, but Leonardo Bonucci would quickly respond with a winner from a corner kick, giving the Bianconeri a 2-1 victory in Giornata 35 of the 2021/22 Serie A season.
After the match, Soncin and Aramu spoke to the press.
Andrea Soncin:
“We asked the team for courage these days, and we got it. The guys reacted in the way that I had hoped they would, and credit to them. We may have deserved more for what we showed on the pitch, but teams of Juventus' caliber find ways to break down the opposition's defence even on difficult days.
The most positive thing we can take away from today’s match is certainly our ability to keep possession and create dangerous chances in front of our opponents' goal. I can only thank Paolo Zanetti for the work done so far, even in preparation for this match, because my personal merits in just three days of training with the team can certainly not be compared to his.
Despite what has just been said, it is clear that we need to return to victory and find points. But a positive performance like today’s remains important. We showed today that we are a team that intends to fight until the end.
Thursday's match against Salernitana and Sunday's match against Bologna will be fundamental. I've seen responsible and motivated players. I hope they keep this spirit in the coming rounds. Our goal is to arrive at the last day of the championship with the possibility of snatching salvation in the match against Cagliari.”
Mattia Aramu:
“Today we definitely showed that we are still alive, that we haven’t given up. We played with personality and intensity, keeping possession of the ball. A draw would have been deserved. Two goals conceded on set pieces hurts. This is something we need to work on more during training.
As far as I'm concerned, I've encountered a string of difficult games in which I couldn't find the goal. Despite this, I've always made myself available to my teammates, continuing to fight. Coach Soncin is giving us courage, even bringing some technical innovations. We're all working towards the common goal of salvation at all costs.”
