GENOA-VENEZIA FC: POST MATCH

February 17, 2025

At the end of the Genoa-Venezia FC match, valid for Matchday 25 of the Serie A Enilive 2024/25 season, which ended with a 2-0 result, the arancioneroverde coach Eusebio Di Francesco, goalkeeper Ionut Radu, and defender Jay Idzes analyzed the match as follows.

Eusebio Di Francesco:
“This evening, the difference was made by their substitutions, with fresh, fast, and bright players. We, on the other hand, made a marking error, an aspect we had managed well up to that point. We should have moved up more quickly, covering that extra meter on their goalkeeper's clearance, but conceding a goal from a flick-on is really unfortunate, especially in a match where we needed to show more quality. We lacked, and I regret saying it, clarity and composure in the final twenty meters, despite a first half where, if any team deserved to score, it was us. The standings don't help us, and beyond tonight's result, we might have deserved something different. However, there's no point in feeling sorry for ourselves—we have to move forward and work to get the best out of this team. We also need to learn to be more clinical in the final twenty-five meters, where games are decided, just as Genoa did by capitalizing on the few chances they had.
The attitude and work ethic of the players are always excellent, but what I ask for is a bit more imagination and creativity; otherwise, it becomes difficult to find a way out. The only solution is to keep working hard throughout the week, also from a psychological standpoint, convincing the players to let themselves go in order to express their qualities better. We have players who are strong in one-on-one situations, and football is also about that—those who have certain qualities must know how to make the most of them.”

Ionut Radu:
“The team is there, and we showed it for eighty minutes. Of course, it hurts to concede a goal like that at the end of the game. We need to pay more attention to details because they were good at capitalizing on two of our lapses with great composure in front of goal. The attitude we showed tonight must become a constant, but we need to be more precise in managing the small details. We must continue to work together, stay united, and approach the next match with the right mindset, trying to be more clinical in the attacking phase.”

Jay Idzes:
“At times, we played a good game, although we struggled to convert chances in front of goal. They were good at punishing us in two situations, despite us defending well for 80 minutes.
In the first half, we played with quality, creating several chances to take the lead, while in the second half, we encountered more difficulties. Now we have 13 matches left, and we must give our all, starting with the next home game against Lazio. We need to bring home points because from now until the end of the season, every match and every point will be crucial.”
