Matchday 16 of the Women’s Serie B featured the clash between Trastevere and Venezia FC. The Lionesses, looking for three crucial points in the standings, relied on their new signing Willis up front, supported by Ballo and Furlanis. At the “Trastevere Stadium,” the orange-and-black team secured the win with two goals in each half.
The opening stages were dominated by Venezia. In the 7th minute, Saggion released Furlanis down the left flank: the winger entered the box and shot just wide. Thirty seconds later, Furlanis was dangerous again with a strike from the edge of the area that hit the crossbar and bounced on the goal line, but no goal was awarded. Venezia kept pushing and took a deserved lead in the 20th minute: Cortesi delivered a corner directly toward goal, the defense cleared, and Doneda pounced on the loose ball, striking first time from distance to make it 0–1. The visitors continued to press: in the 24th minute Cortesi tested the goalkeeper with a free kick from the left side, forcing a corner, and in the 31st Doneda nearly scored her second with a powerful shot from the edge of the box that was blocked by the defense. In the 38th minute Willis also had a chance, receiving from Morin but firing over the bar first time. The second goal came before halftime: in the 43rd minute a handball in the Trastevere box led to a penalty, calmly converted by Furlanis to make it 0–2 at the break.
In the second half Venezia remained in control. In the 51st minute Penzo tried to reopen the match with a header that went wide, but it was Venezia who struck again. In the 65th minute came the best goal of the day: Furlanis delivered a perfect cross from the right wing, Willis timed her run perfectly and headed across goal into the far corner for 0–3. Trastevere attempted to respond, but in the 75th minute the Lionesses added a fourth: a splendid team move ended with a one-two in the box between Furlanis and Doneda, the latter finishing from close range to complete her brace and make it 0–4. The hosts scored a consolation goal in the 83rd minute through Canale from the penalty spot, but the result was no longer in doubt. In the closing stages Venezia had one last chance: Orlandi, set up by Mazis after a fine move by Furlanis, shot confidently but was denied by the goalkeeper. With these three points, the Lionesses move off the bottom of the table and leapfrog Trastevere. Their next fixture is against Verona next weekend at the “Taliercio” Sports Center.
